The man who handled the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) within the Trump administration was shot this week while picking up his wife on K Street in Washington, D.C.
The incident occurred at around 5:45 pm on January 29 when Mike Gill, a father of three, was victimized by gunfire as part of a carjacking while waiting in his car at a curbside. Gill collapsed after getting out of the car and is now in critical condition.
“We can confirm that Mike Gill was the victim of the shooting at the 900 block of K Street Northwest on Monday evening and is in critical condition,” said Erica Richardson, a spokesperson for the Gill family.
“Out of respect for the family, we have nothing additional to add at this time.”
After shooting Gill, the gunman is said to have carjacked at least two other vehicles while attempting a third. One of the victims in these other carjackings died from injuries.
According to law enforcement, the perpetrator got into the parked vehicle before shooting Gill, then fled the scene on foot. Gill had just called his wife to tell her he had arrived, but by the time she came down, he had been shot.

Reports state that the carjacking suspect was shot and killed the following morning around 4:30 am when two officers from the New Carrollton Police Department (NCPD) approached the scene of a laundromat at 7575 Annapolis Road. The man was taken into custody, then to the hospital where he later died.
Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) Executive Assistant Chief Jeffery Carroll confirmed that the suspect had been involved in several other related incidents, including the aforementioned deadly carjacking in which the victim died.
The suspect had been on a carjacking spree spanning both Washington, D.C. and Maryland. His third unsuccessful attempt at carjacking occurred in a vehicle on Third Street NE.
The suspect was later identified as 35-year-old Alberto Vazquez, according to NBC Washington.
Gill’s political career really took off in 2016 when he was asked by officials in Washington, D.C., to be a representative for the GOP on its Board of Elections. He also served as chief of staff to CFTC Chairman Christopher Giancarlo, as well as the commission’s Chief Regulatory Reform Officer.

“How can a criminal own a gun in D.C.? Oh, wait …,” wrote a commenter on a news story about Vazquez’s crime spree, noting that gun control, if it actually worked, should have stopped these carjackings.
“If the puppets can’t keep their own backyard safe, how will they help anyone else?” asked another about the failure of America’s political class to keep the nation safe for citizens.
“The United States is becoming South Africa,” wrote another. “And that’s exactly the plan, so I hope you all have been to Johannesburg because that’s your future.”
“Washington, D.C., is a very dangerous, crime-ridden cesspool,” added someone else to the conversation.
