Over the past few days, Israel has intensified its military operations in Lebanon, killing at least 10 people—including civilians and senior Hezbollah commanders—in a series of drone strikes and targeted assassinations.
The attacks, which began on Oct. 23, mark a significant escalation in hostilities despite a U.S.-backed ceasefire agreement. As thousands flee southern Lebanon to escape the violence, fears grow that Israel may be preparing for a broader military offensive, raising the specter of full-scale war.
The latest Israeli drone strike hit eastern Lebanon on Oct. 26, targeting a vehicle near Baalbek and killing at least two people. Earlier that day, another attack in Naqoura claimed another life. Among the dead were Mohammad Akram Arabiya, a commander in Hezbollah’s elite Radwan Unit, and Zein al-Abidin Ftouni, whose father-in-law—senior Hezbollah logistics official Abbas Karaki—had been assassinated by Israel just a day earlier.
At least two civilians, including an elderly woman, were also killed in the strikes—a violation of international humanitarian law, which prohibits targeting individuals not engaged in active hostilities during a ceasefire.
“We struggled a lot on the road just to get here,” said Issa Baydoun, a displaced Lebanese civilian. “We evacuated our homes because Israel is targeting civilians and attacking them.”
Israeli officials claim the strikes are necessary to prevent Hezbollah from rebuilding its military infrastructure. Defense Minister Israel Katz personally supervised one of the attacks, signaling high-level coordination. Meanwhile, Israeli media reports suggest that Hezbollah has managed to rearm despite Lebanese government efforts to dismantle its capabilities.
U.S. envoy Tom Barrack warned Lebanon on Monday, Oct. 26, that failure to disarm Hezbollah would lead to a “major confrontation” with Israel.
“If Beirut fails to act, Hezbollah’s military wing will inevitably face a major confrontation with Israel, at a moment when Israel is at peak strength and Iranian support for Hezbollah is at its weakest,” Barrack said.
European intelligence sources told Sky News Arabia that a large-scale Israeli operation in Lebanon is “just a matter of time.” Recent Israeli military drills simulating a war against Lebanon further fuel concerns that the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is preparing for a broader offensive.
Tensions between Israel and Hezbollah have simmered since the 2006 Lebanon War, which ended in a fragile ceasefire, BrightU.AI‘s Enoch noted. Hezbollah, backed by Iran, has since expanded its arsenal, while Israel has repeatedly warned it will not tolerate the group’s military buildup near its northern border.
The latest escalation comes amid heightened regional instability, including stalled U.S.-brokered ceasefire talks and Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza. Analysts fear that unchecked hostilities could spiral into a wider conflict, drawing in Iran and destabilizing the entire Middle East.
As Israel’s attacks intensify, Lebanon faces a humanitarian crisis with thousands displaced and civilian casualties mounting. The international community has called for restraint, but with both sides preparing for potential war, diplomacy appears increasingly fragile. Without urgent de-escalation, the region risks plunging into another devastating conflict—one with far-reaching consequences for global security.
